Scholarship Opportunities
You may be eligible to apply for a scholarship from The 3&2 Baseball Club of Johnson County. Scholarships are available to pay the cost of tuition, books, fees and room and board in connection with education at any accredited university, college, community college or vocational school.
If you are interested, read the information and follow the directions carefully. Also, note that applications and supporting documents must be received at the 3&2 Baseball Club offices by June 1 for review by the Selection Committee.
What Are the Awards?
3&2 has the following four scholarships available to graduating seniors that are associated with the program.
- The 3&2 Scholarship was established in 1987. Its purpose is to offer scholarships providing financial assistance to qualified, graduating, high school seniors while attending college. They must be residents of Johnson County who have actively played on a baseball team participating in league play at the 3&2 Baseball Club or otherwise been employed by 3&2 Baseball Club as an umpire, concession employee or in some other capacity. Up to two individual $500 awards will be given.
- The Garrett Warhurst Memorial Scholarship was established in 2011 as a memorial to Garrett Warhurst, a champion of baseball and participant in the Johnson County 3&2 program. Its purpose is to offer a scholarship that provides financial assistance to qualified, graduating high school seniors. This scholarship exists as the result of the Warhurst’s many family members, friends and acquaintances contributions.
- The Loran Freeman Memorial Scholarship was established in 1997 as a memorial to Loran Charles Freeman, a long time supporter and participant in the 3&2 program. This scholarship exists as the result of the efforts of Loran’s many friends, acquaintances and business associates as well as family members. Loran's commitment to the youth of this area was exemplified by the sponsoring and coaching that he did for various sports teams. As a member of The 3&2 Baseball Club, he was a sincere and inspirational leader of baseball teams for sixteen years. One $500 award will be given.
- The Robert Heidenburg Umpire Scholarship was established in 2012 for graduating seniors who currently umpire in the 3&2 program. Mr. Heidenburg is a long-time umpire and umpire supervisor at 3&2 dating back to the 1970’s. One $500 award will be given.
Who Is Eligible?
- To be eligible for the 3&2 Scholarship, a person must have participated in The 3&2 Baseball Club of Johnson County as a player, umpire, concessions or grounds employee or in some other capacity. Seniors in high school are eligible to apply.
- For the Garrett Warhurst Memorial Scholarship, applicants must be a graduating high school senior, in need of financial aid and has played or worked in the 3&2 program for at least 2 years.
- For the Loran Freeman Memorial Scholarship, a person must be a graduating high school senior who has played baseball in the 3&2 program.
- For the Robert Heidenburg Umpire Scholarship, applicants must be graduating high school seniors and currently active as an umpire in the 3&2 program.
What is the Selection Criteria?
- For the 3&2 Scholarship, applicants must demonstrate high moral standards and good standing in the community. Awards will also be based upon academic record, class rank, and work experience, if any, and the applicant’s record of past or present participation in non-curricular school and/or civic/community activities All applicants must exhibit a grade point average of 2.5 or higher.
- For the Garrett Warhurst Memorial, applicants must demonstrate good moral standards, a positive attitude, a willingness to succeed and, above all, a desire to make a positive difference in their life and the lives of others. A large emphasis will be placed on applicant’s financial need, as Garrett truly valued sharing and giving to those less fortunate.
- For the Loran Freeman Memorial, the Freeman family has expressed a desire to offer this scholarship to a deserving individual whose attributes would include, but not limited to: a good attitude, personality and appearance, an ability to get along with others, a high level of effort, commitment, and baseball aptitude, a team player who perseveres, hustles and has individual accomplishments both on and off the playing field.
- For the Robert Heidenburg Umpire Scholarship, the award will be given to the umpire who strives to constantly improve as an umpire and is a good citizen in the community.
How Do I Apply?
For the 3&2, Loran Freeman and Heidenburg Umpire scholarships complete the application form and return to the 3&2 Baseball Club office at PO Box 14011, Lenexa, KS 66285; Attention: Scholarship Committee, with the appropriate supplementary materials that include:
- Proof of enrollment in any accredited university, college, community college or vocational school.
- Copy of high school transcript
- Letter(s) of recommendation from current coach or supervisor at 3&2, school representative and/or church/community leader.

When is Application Due?
All materials, including the application, transcripts, receipts (if available) and enrollment verification (if available) are due to the Scholarship Selection Committee by June 25.
When are the Awards Presented?
Awards of all scholarships will be made in July.
