This past week, the life of a local high school baseball player was saved by the quick response of attendees and access to an Automated External Defibrilator (AED).
We want everyone to be aware that should this type of situation arise at 3&2, AED's are located in each field manager's office at both complexes, one in the small concession stand between fields 1 and 2, with an additional unit in a golf cart at the West Complex that is generally out and about.
3&2 was given five AED's from the Henning Foundation, established when Denise Henning’s husband had a cardiac arrest incident at a Kansas City area youth baseball/softball complex. He passed away from a heart attack, leaving his wife Denise with two young kids without a father. Denise believed if there would have been an AED available at the park, her husband may have survived.
She started raising money to provide non-profits like 3&2 free AEDs and monitoring services from AED Authority. She herself toured our facility and determined how many we needed and where the units would be placed. She wanted to make sure no matter where you were in the park, you were no more than 60 seconds from an AED in case of emergency.
As if losing Tim Henning wasn’t bad enough in 2012 for the family, Denise was diagnosed with and died of cancer in 2016 so the Henning Foundation is their legacy that we proudly carry here at 3&2.
There are a variety of scholarships available for graduating seniors that have participated in the 3&2 program as either a player, umpire or an employee. Applications for the these starships are due by June 1.
Information and applications can be found on 3&2's web site here.
The Loran Freeman Memorial Scholarship was established in 1997 as a memorial to Loran Charles Freeman, a long time supporter and participant in the 3&2 baseball program. This scholarship exists as the result of the efforts of Loran’s many friends, acquaintances and business associates as well as family members. Loran's commitment to the youth of this area was exemplified by the sponsoring and coaching that he did for various sports teams. As a member of The 3&2 Baseball Club, he was a sincere and inspirational leader of baseball teams for sixteen years. One $1000 award will be given.
The Robert Heidenburg Umpire Scholarship was established in 2012 for graduating seniors who currently umpire in the 3&2 program. Mr. Heidenburg is a long-time umpire and umpire supervisor at 3&2 dating back to the 1970’s. One $1000 award will be given.
The Garrett Warhurst Memorial Scholarship was established in 2011 as a memorial to Garrett Warhurst, a champion of baseball and participant in the Johnson County 3&2 baseball program. Its purpose is to offer a scholarship that provides financial assistance to qualified, graduating high school seniors. This scholarship exists as the result of the Warhurst’s many family members, friends and acquaintances contributions.
There are many great baseball camp opportunities available through Johnson County 3&2 Baseball this summer.
For players in K-5th grades, 3&2 runs camps at the East Complex starting June 3rd.
For players currently in the 6th-8th grades, many of the local high school coaches have camps at their schools for players that will be attending that high school. If your school isn't listed, that coach does not run a camp through the 3&2 program. You are always welcome to attend camps outside of your high school area.
Many of these camps, much like several of the winter hitting camp sessions, will fill up. With registration deadlines quickly approaching, now is the time to sign up!
